It’s been wedding sweets galore lately in our retro sweet warehouse! The Chewbz team have been especially busy helping lots of lovely couples bring some retro sweetness to their big days.
To celebrate the last few weeks of summer loving, we’ve picked possibly the most wedding-related sweet of all time for this weeks Retro sweet of the week…
Sugared Almonds!
You can’t get more traditional than these sweets. Did you know that Sugared Almonds date back to the 13th Century?
Since then, sweet-toothed couples have been choosing Sugared Almonds as the perfect Wedding Favours. It’s tradition to give 5 to each guest to represent a long life, wealth, health and happiness. Ahh!
Not just for weddings though, a certain member of the Chewbz team (ahem, Dom) enjoys these on an almost daily basis in the Chewbz office!
If you’d ♥ to get your hands on some Sugared Almonds, simply leave a comment on this post. Our favourite comment will win the sweets.
Make sure you leave your comment before 9am next Monday 29th August.

Never had sugared Almonds before, would love to try them.
Sugared almonds are so gorgeous.
On my way to the corner shop down by the beach in my town where I usually buy my sweets from (including sugared almonds) a large gust of wind came and blew my skirt up in front of all of the holiday makers! One thing they won’t forget – my Tom and Jerry pants :p
When I was little, Santa left a mini stocking at my Grandparents house for us to “discover” when we visited after Christmas. The stockings really were tiny, no more than 10cm tall but were always filled with lots and every year mine included sugared almonds. Winning some would mean reliving my childhood 🙂
My brother married an italian – it was traditional to have them on the wedding table – I have loved them ever since!
OMG when I think of Sugared Almonds, I think of Christmas – when I was younger we got these in our stocking every single year – loved them too but never had them for years now since leaving home. Many happy Christmas memories!
oh wow retro is the word!!
Being an 80’s child I love retro sweets. Sugared almonds are great

As a kid I remember my Mum eating these but she never shared with us – said they were grown up sweets!!
No why have I not eaten some of these for so long? Its been at least 17 minutes….
Oh how I need sweetening up ! Nutty or what ?

WOW! my sweet jar would certainly be brightened and flavoured up with these gorgeous sweets.
these are great
A tour bus driver drives with a bus full of seniors down a motorway, when a little old lady taps him on his shoulder. She offers him a handful of almonds, which he gratefully munches down. After approx. 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder again and she hands him another handful of almonds.
She repeats this gesture about eight times. At the ninth time he asks the little old lady why they do not eat the almonds themselves, whereupon she replies that it is not possible because of their old teeth, they are not able to
chew them. “Why do you buy them then?” he asks puzzled. Where upon the old lady answers, “We just love the chocolate around them.”
UM…I THINK I’D BETTER STICK TO SUGARED ALMONDS INSTEAD…JUST IN CASE! 😉

Wealth, health, happiness, fertility; each sugar almond represents something when given out at a wedding.
LOVE THESE MY DAUGHTER HAD THEM FOR HER WEDDING FAVOURS SO THEY ALWAYS BRING BACK GREAT MEMORIES FOR ME
lovely x my hubby`s favourite x
Sugared almonds always remind me of Christmas – Grandma used to give me little packet every year, with the blue ones taken out (she gave my boy cousin my blue ones and I got his pink ones!). He was a ‘cruncher’ and I was a ‘sucker’ so mine lasted longer, and he’d badger me to give him some of mine, but he wasn’t allowed!
Isn’t it strange the way little things trigger memories like that – especialy sweets I think.
my nans favourite at christmas, would love to treat her to some early! no false teeth for her either biting on these!
When we were kids my nana had a pretty bag full of these in a cabinet, nso we ate them. Little did we know that she’d been saving them for over a decade from her wedding 🙁
Sugared almonds – the ultimate break your teeth if you bite too hard treat
These were my late father-in-laws favourite sweets, he would buy a packed for himself every Saturday morning when he went for his paper and some other sweets for the grandchildren!
He would make them last the whole week (such will power!)
The story he told me behind his choice was that he was given some when he was brought ashore in Japan after being bombed out of his ship during WW2, he said he remembered all the ship mates he’d lost whilst he was eating them.
He was such a lovely kind man, the best Father-in-law a girl could ask for. Can you tell I miss him loads!
Yum! These always remind me of a wedding.

The traditional five sugared almonds that are in wedding favours are, as you pointed out, meant to represent ‘a long life, wealth, health and happiness’. The fifth one reperesents fertility – I think I’d leave that one out myself!!
x
i love sugared almonds havent had them for ages xx
HA! I remember these from Xmas when I was little. They were my grandads favourites, one year my brother and i put them in our mouths to crack the coating, remove it, then put the almond back in the bowl. I remember my Dad coming in from work, grabbing a drink and sitting down and helping himself to a handful of “almonds”!! We didnt dare tell him – no could we explain to my Grandad where the sugared almonds had gone! Funny thing is, I absolutely love them now I have grown up!
